THE site of a former school has been safeguarded for future educational use.
Braintree Council’s Local Development Framework sub committee agreed to set aside land at Bellfields in Witham for education rather than community use.
The site includes the former Chipping Hill Infant School in Church Street, Witham.
Members of the sub-committee agreed to the change as long as they are later told how much of the site will be used.
They also set aside the part of Bellfields that runs along Braintree Road as visually important space.
An Essex County Council spokesman was unable to say what kind of education the site would be used for.
She said: “Essex County Council owns the land which was formerly occupied by Chipping Hill Infant School as well as the fenced land at the site known as Bellfield.
“The future of the site has not yet been decided. Officers are currently assessing the future educational requirements and existing educational provision for the area in order to find the most appropriate and suitable solution.”
