Lights on Witham's industrial estates will not be turned off to save cash, to the relief of businesses and councillors worried about crime.

It was feared Essex County Council’s plans to switch off most streetlamps across the county between midnight and 5am would attract criminals to Witham’s industrial estates.

Concern was also raised the darkness could affect CCTV cameras.

The county council had initially said only areas with CCTV and high-risk properties and areas in town centres, such as train stations, would be exempt from the switch off.

Directors of Witham Industrial Watch and estate manager David Cocker have now persuaded the council to keep them on in the town's industrial estates.
