An off-duty police officer who wrestled an axe out of a man’s hands has been commended for his bravery.

Inspector John Sanderson, who lives off Maltings Lane, Witham, was travelling home from work when he saw a man brandishing an axe at passengers on-board a tube train.

He managed to disarm the man during a violent struggle, causing the suspect to flee the scene.

On Friday, Mr Sanderson, 50, was presented with a certificate of commendation for his actions at West Ham underground station on June 26, 2011.
