Witham: Dad barred from job after being told he is not a British citizen Witham: Dad barred from job after being told he is not a British citizen

A father has been told he has no right to work in the country - despite living here for nearly almost all his life.

Michael Williams, 40, had even worked as a delivery driver and a cycle shop manager, despite having no British passport or documents to prove when he arrived in the country.

But he now fears losing his five-year-old daughter Kelcy - whom he gave up work for in 2007 to look after - because of doubts about his entitlement to benefits.

Mr Williams, of St Andrews Road, Hatfield Peverel, said: “I have never faced such a problem in my life.

“I have gone everywhere for help and no-one has ever come across a case like this before."

Then he should be reinstated into his job and apologised to by his employers. Someone should be fighting his corner. There must be a lot more to this.

It's just a paperwork problem. He probably came in on his mother's passport. Born overseas (bet the parent didn't register him with the British Embassy).

I think there is a sub-clause in the nationalisation bill ; something like 'leave to stay' if he can prove his mother was British. This gives him all the rights of a British citizen but not the nationality. (But I could be wrong.)

Or get nationalised ; it costs a bit but then the problem is solved for the rest of your life.

I was under the impression from the papers I was sent from HM government, that once registered, my foriegn-born children are British nationals, given that their father is a born Brit.

... and more inanity from the Brainless and Witless: why in the hell would he need a passport for as as a delivery or shop manager?

You need to provide evidence to your employer that you are legally able to work in the UK and often a passport is used. Otherwise, it's a birth certificate. If you can't provide this when asked (usually just after being offered the job) then the employer has a problem legally employing you.

Hmmm. As you say, then, there has to be much more to the story.
