Braintree: Planners recommend refusal for Sainsbury's plans

Sainsbury's is consulting a top lawyer after planners recommended its plans for a superstore be thrown out.

Town centre shops will suffer if the retailer is allowed to redevelop the Broomhills Industrial Estate store, off Rayne Road, Braintree, argue Braintree Council planning officers.

They feared it could force the closure of Morrisons - which hopes to expand its George Yard store - and said Sainsbury’s had not looked at alternative sites in Braintree and Halstead.

Councillors on the planning committee are due to discuss the plans on Tuesday.

Why not get Tesco to sell one of their Braintree stores to foster competition

The government have done it to airports and banks

Tesco got planning permission to take 10 spaces out of the Grove car park (Witham) to build a car wash less than a quarter of a mile from an existing one, which will suffer a big loss in its business and probably lose jobs. You cna't find a space in the Grove on a Saturday even before they cut the number of spaces.
Of course it will get turned down. It has not been submitted by Tesco. Maybe they should be renamed Tesco district council.Maybe all residents should boycott tesco .Are a variety of supermarkets in chelmsford and colchester but they all still survive.plus already a sainsbury in braintree anyway right near Morrison so how does that not currently affect business. I would rather drive to sainsbury boreham than shop in tesco and get online for stuff from asda .hopefully the fact 2 supermarkets are now complaining will strengthen Morrison's witham case.will go to court and BDC will fight it using the public purse !

So who or what is going to invest &/or develop the decapitated Broomhills Industrial Estate? Who's going to buy the land from Sainsbury's? If it eventually ends up having houses built on it, fair enough. But I would bite Sainsbury's hand off in the current climate. Investment package of half a Million pounds for the town centre, creation of 400 jobs. This has to be the easiest decision on the face of the earth.
