Budding authors will take their readers on a trip around the world in 80 words.

Twenty six year 8 students at Maltings Academy will see their work published after entering a young writers competition.

The pupils, who go to the Spinks Lane academy in Witham, described places in just 80 words to be included in the book, Around the World in 80 Words.

English teacher Yasmine Siddiqui said: “I am so proud of them.

“They really let their imaginations run wild with some writing about the moon or about living in a paper bag.

“They tried so hard and deserve this recognition.”

The book will be published in April.

Four year 11 pupils are also celebrating their success after finishing 150th out of 8,000 schools in the annual IFS Student Investment Challenge.

Adam Abell, Morgan Ager, Adam Piper and Kieran McGowan turned £100,000 into £120,000 in the virtual challenge by investing in portfolios.

Paul Ambrose, head of business studies, said: “This year, we had the biggest number of teams entering.

“They had to do their research into what shares might be worth investing in and what things might impact on it, such as Christmas shopping.

“With the amount of virtual money they made, they would have come in the top ten in other regions. I’m really proud of what they have achieved.”
