Witham: Apology to woman told to pay £120 to use road

Housing bosses have apologised after mistakenly asking a pensioner to pay to use a road she has used for 13 years.

Greenfields Community Housing had told Valerie Wakefield she needed an access licence, costing £20 a year and a £100 one-off administration fee.

Without one, it would have meant Mrs Wakefield, of Pelly Avenue, Witham, could not use walk or drive on the access road from Laurence Avenue behind her house.

But Greenfields told the Times: “We looked into the case further and discovered that Mrs Wakefield does have an established right of way, which isn’t shown on the conveyance map that we hold from 1955. "
