A car enthusiast who organised a meet for more than 100 other petrolheads has rushed to defend their controversial past time.

Keen to shake off the boy racer tag, Ross Higgins, 19, has called for compromise and feels people are far too quick to judge.

Mr Higgins, of Crittall Court, Witham, admitted he was shocked when about 150 people turned up at Braintree Freeport car park for the unauthorised rally he organised through Facebook last month.

But he said he was frustrated residents on the other side of the railway line, in the Mill Park Drive area, had complained about the noise.

Ross needs to accept that his events will be judged by the worst of those it attracts. He has my sympathies but after having been at Freeport that night for the cinema, it wasn't a pleasant environment. Lots of people walking in the roads oblivious of traffic and plenty of people driving/riding exactly to sterotype: fast, dangerously, inconsiderately and unpredictably.

I think with proper planning and engagement with the locals and police, it could actually be a positive event. At the moment, it's far from it.

If he doesn't want residents complaining about the noise, then maybe they shouldn't make an excessive amount of noise!
