Braintree: Fish finger eating on a different scale Braintree: Fish finger eating on a different scale

How many fish fingers could you eat in an hour?

Pub-goers will find out just that as they go head-to-head in a bonkers fish finger eating contest at The Royal Oak, in East Street, Braintree, tomorrow.

The competition, which gets underway at 7pm, has been organised by the pub’s Guinness club in aid of the breast cancer clinic at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

Landlady and breast cancer survivor Inge Hubrich, 52, who runs the pub with husband Tony, said: “I had breast cancer in 2011 and had to have chemotherapy and everything, and the clinic were absolutely brilliant.

“When I was last in for a check-up I noticed there was a sign saying that they were looking to raise money and thought it would be great if we could help.”

Mrs Hubrich, who has lived in the town for 30 years, said the idea for the competition came about when members of the Guinness club were jokingly boasting about just how many fish fingers they could eat.

The club, which is made up of “like-minded lovers of Guinness”, has been running for eight months and has already raised about £300 for the clinic through a fine system and smaller events.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Saturday’s competitors or make a donation is urged to come along on the night.

The contest will be followed by Karaoke.
