Burton is leaving Witham Burton is leaving Witham

Men's clothes shop Burton is leaving Witham.

A spokesman confirmed the store, at The Grove Shopping Centre, will close on April 20 due to the lease expiring.

She said: “As a group we endeavour to redeploy staff from closing stores into other retail outlets where possible across the Arcadia and BHS brands.”

However, she would not confirm how many staff will be affected.

This town's becoming like a ghost town.

Braintree Council have destroyed Braintree now its Withams turn
Their answer is to build more shops where there are empty shops lack of commonsense
So more charity and pop-up shops can come which do not contribute much to
council tax
They are scared to let Morrison's expand because of their unhealthy relationship with Tesco's and fear of competition
This council is not to be trusted
Perhaps culture will change with a new CEO but that is doubtful

Again another non-sensical rant about BDC....Burtons want to move away after their lease ran out because why???

Was it that the rates(set by BDC) were to high..

OR

was it nobody in Witham shopped there????

So easy to jump to the wrong conclusion.

If no decent shops in town then nothing to draw people in so people shop elsewhere meaning other businesses suffer thats what has happened to alto of shops and is a rate issue too as business that have gone have said rates have been a factor

People moaning that Burton's is going to close - yes it's sad that there is likely to be people made unemployed because of this. But the people of Witham moaning that it's closing - it's your fault! If you had have shopped there, they would be making a profit and then the owners would renew the lease. But quite clearly, it's not worth them re-newing the lease, because people don't shop there. I pass there every lunch time, and rarely see anyone in there.
Yes the town is rubbish, and so we don't attract out of town shoppers or indeed other shops to open up, but don't moan that we are losing another shop, that, if people had have used, we would have been likely to have kept.

People don't shop there as why would you come to town just to shop there. If you are going clothes shopping why would you shop in Witham when you only have one men's shop,no kids shops and few women's shops. You would be in and out of town in 2 minutes not exactly a thrilling or prolonged shopping experience when you can spend a whole day in Chelmsford and pay the same cost in parking ! This town has grown massively in population and the council have missed an opportunity to have decent retailers in town and then the growing population of Witham would shop there. The eateries do well as there is a reasonable choice now with crofters ,the Thai cottage and a new pizza restaurant amongst other things and Byfords and the butchers do ok but that is because they are good quality retailers with good customer service and fill a need.

I may be wrong but this is a common trend that affects towns and cities across the UK as well as other major western countries. Our society has changed dramatically and attitudes along with it: simplistically, we all demand our own individual freedoms regardless of the effect that has on the greater good. That translates in one instance to individual transport - a car. To shop in the middle of town is the epitome of a royal PITA (no, not the greek wrap). I won't drive into a small congested town center to shop at a few stores before I have to get in the car and drive elsewhere, park and repeat. Over and again! Nope. I, like most people, will take my car to a wide open parking lot, dump it and shop till I drop in a nice covered mall. Where all the shops I could possibly want are within reasonable walking distance (Thurrock, anyone?). And then get back in my loaded-up car and drive home. No busses. No parking hassles. Easy peasy - lemon-squeezy! Think about it.

Now, as for the BDC: they need to demonstrate some imagination and chutzpah and stop listening to moaning minnies that have nothing constructive to say, nothing imaginative nor feasible to offer and re-think the complete idea of the town center experience. Infrastructure would be a damned fine start, doncha think?
