Braintree: Councillor takes on difference in fuel prices

2:46pm Friday 22nd February 2013

A young councillor is taking the fight to stop drivers paying more at the district's fuel pumps to the Office of Fair Trading.

Stephen Canning is calling on the OFT to reconsider its decision not to hold an inquiry into allegations of anti-competitive behaviour in the petrol and diesel market.

He successfully asked members to back the call, and to support MP Robert Halfon who is also asking for the decision to be reconsidered, at a full council meeting on Wednesday.

Mr Canning said: “I'm moving this motion as a young person who has experienced first hand how the exorbitant cost of petrol adds up to make driving increasingly costly for people who have no choice but to use a car and in particular young people and struggling families.

“What concerns me most is the disparate cost of fuel in local areas that can vary wildly.”
