Business is booming for butchers as a result of the national horse meat scandal.

Andrew Callaghan, manager of Meat Inn at The Centre, Halstead, said: “We have seen an increase in people, especially with buying mince and sausages.

“It is good for us, plus we make all our sausages, mince and burgers on the premises, so we know what goes in them, we are not reliant on other people.”

Essex County Council is working with a “significant number” of local and national suppliers of school meals.

A spokesman said: “Our early findings indicate that there is no cause for concern as the majority of our school food provision is made from scratch on school premises using fresh natural ingredients purchased from reliable and reputable suppliers who are able to provide full provenance traceability."
