A footballer has been told to pay another player £5,000 compensation for an assault during a game.
Chelmsford Crown Court heard how Rahul Jagota ended up with a broken cheekbone and a broken eye socket after he was punched.
Adam Shelton, 20, of Humber Road, Witham, was given a suspended jail sentence after he admitted a charge of wounding.
He was banned from football for five years and given a six month curfew between 7pm and 5am.
Recorder Alastair Wilson QC gave him 18 months to pay Mr Jagota £5,000 compensation.
Shelton was also banned from the ground in Spinks Lane, Witham, where the attack happened, and from the Benton Hall gym for two years.
Steven Levy, mitigating, told the court Shelton, who had no previous convictions, thought the victim assaulted him and "totally misjudged the situation."
