A football chairman insists relocation to a new stadium is vital to prevent the club slipping backwards.

Braintree Town Football Club wants to relocate from its current stadium to a new base which will form part of a 600-home development off Panfield Lane.

But some fans and residents have expressed concerns the club lacks the fanbase and sustained on-the-pitch success to justify a move.

Braintree Town is currently playing its second season in the Conference National division and it is now only one step away from playing in the Football League.

Chairman Lee Harding said: “As we progress through the hierarchy we must meet certain requirements. If we achieve promotion to the Football League we would need to make a number of other improvements that the existing site is not suitable for."
