Braintree: Pensioner quits driving after three-wheeler mistakenly driven on wrong side of road
A grandfather who mistakenly drove his Reliant Robin down the wrong side of a dual carriageway has surrendered his licence and urged others to accept when the time comes for them to do the same.
Philip Kelly, 76, was spotted by an off-duty police officer driving his beloved white three-wheeler on the wrong side of the A131 in Great Leighs in October last year.
Appearing at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court last Thursday, Kelly, of College Road, Braintree, admitted driving without due care and attention.
Magistrates ordered Kelly to pay a £20 fine and £20 victim surcharge.
They also handed him seven penalty points on his licence, but the court heard he had since surrendered his licence anyway and had no intention of driving again.
