Armed police were called to reports of a group of men with shotguns near Great Notley Discovery Centre only to find it was a clay pigeon shoot.

The armed unit, supported by the police helicopter, were sent after police received a call just after 2.45pm yesterday about concerns of a group of men in a field near the Discovery Centre.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Firearms officers attended along with the police helicopter and established the men were part of an organised clay pigeon shoot."

She added the caller's concerns were taken seriously but all was found to be in order.

This is townies in the countryside not having a clue. Do the police need to know when clay shoots are organised?

Not only should the Police be notified, Notices should be put up around the area warning others of what is happening.
The call was made with good intentions, had I been in their shoes, I'd have done the same.

Surely the police could have checked their records before launching the firing squad. Clay shoots, organised shoots, roost shoots, lamping, general gamekeeping etc happen all the time in the countryside and it's idiots that don't recognise it for what it is that cause the police to overreact.

@OrangeChris: I think you need to mind your own business and keep your own affairs in order before you insist on inserting your proboscis in other people's.

People exercising their rights should not have to deal with busy bodies intruding.
