Maltings Academy had the most improved GCSE results in the district last year, new figures show.
The school in Spinks Lane, Witham, had 145 pupils take the exams in 2012, with 51% of them achieving at least five A* to C grades including English and maths compared to 42 per cent in 2011.
The new league tables, which were published last week, showed Honywood School in Westfield Drive, Coggeshall is the best performing state school in the area with 72% of students achieving five GCSEs grades A* to C including English and maths.
