Police involved in the search for a man who went missing at a Christmas party have recovered a body from water at Roydon Marina.

Edward Gillespie, 38, from Luton, has not been seen since attending an event at Roydon Marina Hotel, near Harlow, on December 22.

A member of the public on a boat alerted officers to what they believed to be a body shortly before 10.40am this morning.

Essex Police's marine unit attended the location and the body was recovered before being taken to a nearby hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Hooper said: "The body has not been formally identified at this time but we have suspended our search for Ed and his family have been informed of this discovery.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this very distressing time. We would like to place on the record our thanks to everyone who has assisted us in our search for Ed and are sorry that the news we have is so sad."

Mr Hooper added the coroner had been informed of the discovery, and police would now be working with her to confirm the identity of the deceased.
