Free dog poo bags will no long be given out after Braintree Council revealed it has spent more than £1,000 per year on them.

Since July 2010 the council has spent about £4,000 buying 570,000 poo bags but will not buy anymore.

Wendy Schmitt, cabinet member for place, said: “It’s not fair that all local taxpayers should have to contribute towards individuals’ lifestyle choices.

“Therefore the last stock purchase was made in August 2011 and now this stock has been depleted.”
