Cycling fans hopes of seeing the world’s top competitors up close and personal in the Braintree district have been dashed.

In December, it was announced the 2014 staging of the race will start in Britain, before moving on to mainland Europe.

A third stage of the race, between Cambridge and London, sparked optimism that cyclists including defending champion Sir Bradley Wiggins could be racing through the district's streets.

But an official announcement today revealed that Braintree had missed out, although the route will pass through the neighbouring Uttlesford district on its way to the capital.
