Halstead: Family of hero pilot cross Atlantic to attend remembrance ceremony

Halstead: Family of hero pilot cross Atlantic to attend remembrance ceremony Halstead: Family of hero pilot cross Atlantic to attend remembrance ceremony

The family of an American serviceman were overwhelmed as villagers turned out in force to remember his heroic actions.

US Air Force Colonel Wendell Kelley, 42, died 50 years ago after his plane crashed into a field off Halstead Road, Gosfield.

Three members of the colonel’s family flew to the UK from Oklahoma at the weekend to attend a ceremony in the village yesterday.

Rather than parachuting to safety, Mr Kelley remained in the plane after its engine failed to prevent it from crashing into Gosfield Primary School.
