Taxpayers face paying thousands of pounds after a Tesco-owned shop chain won an appeal against Braintree Council.
The One Stop shop for the Inn on the Green in Coldnailhurst Avenue, Braintree, was given the go ahead on Monday after the planning inspectorate overturned a Braintree Council decision.
The company believed Braintree Council’s refusal of planning permission to make alterations to the building was unreasonable and demanded it pay the costs of appeal the decision.
The planning inspector R J Marshall found that Braintree Council’s “unreasonable behaviour” had resulted in unnecessary costs.
Andy Thurston, owner of nearby newsagent Gemco, collected more than 2,000 signatures against the plans.
More than 200 objections were also lodged.
