Some accommodation at Chelmsford Prison will be closed under Government plans to update the nation's prisons.
In an announcement made on Thursday morning, the Ministry of Justice said parts of the prison in Springfield Road will be closed as they begin feasibility work on creating a new prison which could hold more than 2,000 prisoners.
The plans are looking to replace older jails and decrease the running cost of the system by an expected £63million annually.
