Maldon/Kelvedon: Man wanted in connection with racial abuse Maldon/Kelvedon: Man wanted in connection with racial abuse

Detectives from British Transport Police (BTP) are seeking to identify a man they would like to speak to in connection with an incident of racial abuse on an Essex bound train on Friday.

The man is thought to have left the service at Kelvedon.
Detective Constable Alan Reed, the investigating officer, explained: “The victim, a 50-year-old Eastern European woman from Maldon, boarded the 6.32pm service to Walton at Liverpool Street.

“A man sat opposite her suddenly began swearing loudly whilst having a conversation on his mobile phone.

“When the victim suggested the man stop swearing, he launched into a tirade of racist abuse towards the woman, which continued for 20 minutes.

“The man also made threats to other passengers on the train who were watching the incident.“

Officers have conducted several lines of enquiry, including reviewing CCTV footage and have since identified a man they believe has key information about the incident.

DC Reed continued: “This kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable and we are determined to find the person responsible.

“We would encourage anyone who recognises the man in the picture, or knows his whereabouts to get in touch. I would also like to appeal to anyone who was on the train at the time and witnessed the incident to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference B7/LNA of 09/01/2013. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

I hope the bully has his collar felt personally.

I almost totally disagree with the first posting here.

I would like to congratulate the first poster on not only somehow siding with a racist, and making their own racist comments in the process, but also successfully managing to avoid any form of punctuation in the process. The fact that you think that riding a train without paying the correct fare is somehow worse than twenty minutes of racist abuse is quite frankly incredible.

Bhudeeka, I have had just about enough of you. Your abuse of other posters, who happen to disagree with you, amounys to bigotry and so I have reported this abuse to the correct people.

As someone who also pays thousands to commute to work I can still say I have less of a problem with people jumping a fare than I do with people handing out racist abuse on the train.

Personally, sharing a carriage with people like this make me feel uncomfortable on the journey to and from work, whereas a fare-dodger isn't usually apparent. I don't think the small number of people paying not paying has an effect that equates to our annual fare increases, so that isn't really of concern to me, and I don't understand why it would be of more concern to you than racist attacks.

I don't think I'm likely to understand your viewpoint here though, as it sounds very messed up and backwards to me.

wormshero, you obviously don't catch the 17:50 I/C service. I have only had my ticket checked once in the past couple of months and then the guard let off peakers go without paying the penalty. I have heard conversations along the lines of 'I hope the guard doesn't check tickets' (obvious dodgers) and then you get those who make their way into first class after the guard has passed by (dodging again !). So its not a small number dodging........

I think the point that Bhudeeka is constantly trying to make through her postings (and rather badly in this instance) is that, being foreign herself, she feels that the racist laws falls too heavily in favour of non-English/white people. Of course, no-one wants or deserves to be intimated by another passenger on a train (or anywhere else) and what this man (term used loosely) did was totally outrageous and unacceptable in this day and age

My usual train leaves Liverpool St. earlier than that, but I'll accept your point, I have no statistics for fare jumpers (I doubt there are any official ones, it'd be hard to work out). It's kind of an irrelevant point anyway (although I doubt it's a significant proportion). I've never read fare dodgers as being the cause of over-inflation season ticket price hikes anyway, but I still wonder why any sane person would take more issue with someone jumping the fare than someone handing out racist abuse and threatening other passengers. Completely backwards and slightly concerning.

Fare dodgers are almost as disgusting as racists, but at least they are seldom violent. I hope this bully is caught and sentenced to a spell in prison. Let's hope that the people who witnessed this episode spot him if he ever boards their train again.

No idea what the first poster wrote, but it must have been pretty bad, so well done the person who reported it, and well done the Gazette for deleting it.

The Transport Police should target certain trains, to purge out the "Fare dodgers" if more people report over heard conversations they will have some idea of the worst trains it happens on and cover these accordingly!

Bhudeeka, I personally think it is a shame that different opinions cannot be tollerated if they are not seen as sufficiently on the right side of "PC" for the middle-of-the-road brigade. But there you go.

I had my ticket checked on the 06.57 Witham to Liverpool Street train this morning.

Bhudeeka, abuse of anybody on a train is wrong, whatever the colour or nationality of abuser and abusee. Simple as. Fare dodging is a separate issue. I´m sure some people do it, but quite hard to quantify.

There have been a few cases recently of abuse being filmed and put on You Tube. It´s good that it sometimes catches the abusers, although I do wonder if it is normalising it a bit. I hope that if I ever saw it going on, I would step in and try to stop it. If nobody tries to do anything, the abuser thinks it is OK. But I do accept that you never know if somebody is carrying a knife. Bottom line: any abuse of this sort should not be tolerated.

You haven't got a clue, Yellow Peril, if you think I'm PC and middle of the road.

I've no time at all for fare dodgers, but definitely don't think that people should just have to put up with aggressive bullies, which seemed to me to be the gist of the original post, before it descended into a rant!

Dug, the point I was making was that people jump on anyone with an opinion which isn't in line with what we are expected to say and think these days and then someone will go and report them to the paper and they get struck off. People should be allowed to say what they actually think and if that means coming down on the side of the perpetrator then so be it. It should be allowed.

I absolutely "have a clue" about you. You've just given it to me.
