Cycling fans could see the world’s top competitors up close and personal if the Tour de France comes to Braintree district.

Last month it was announced the 2014 edition of the race will start in Britain, before moving onto mainland Europe.

A third stage of the race, between Cambridge and London, might mean defending champion Bradley Wiggins will race through the district’s streets.

The first two stages will take place in Yorkshire, before the route moves south to finish in London.

It is likely to start in Cambridge and could pass through Essex on its way to the capital.

In 2010 the Tour of Britain travelled through Halstead, Braintree and Witham town centres.
