A councillor was ordered to repay £302 of wrongly claimed mileage after he was found to have used his position for financial gain.
Ron Ramage, of Graces Close, Witham, was hauled before Braintree Council’s Standards Committee which found that he breached the code of conduct by wrongly using his position to his advantage.
He was cleared of bringing the council into disrepute.
He repaid the money, which equated to 755 miles, by offsetting it against new expenses claimed between July and September this year.
Lesley Day, who was appointed by the monitoring officer, wrote a final report detailing 26 claims to the committee, which met in July.
In it she said: “Based on my investigation, I do not consider councillor Ramage’s explanations regarding over-claimed mileage and claiming for mileage for meetings where attendance was not recorded or the meeting was not traced or cancelled, acceptable in anyway."
