A driver's life was endangered when rocks were thrown at his van near a bridge.

Police believe two teenagers are responsible for the crime and have condemned the “mindless stupidity” of the act.

The driver, a man in his forties from Clacton, escaped injury, but his van’s headlight was smashed, causing £130 of damage.

The blue Volkwagen Transporter van was travelling along Highfields Road, Witham, at 3.15pm on Thursday.

Chief Inspector Nick Lee, Braintree district commander, said: “We have had incidents in the past on the A12 but there is nothing to suggest this is connected.

“This is mindless stupidity and it puts people’s lives in danger.”
