A trust that raises awareness of a famous Braintree scientist has handed out its first award in his honour.

Cambridge University zoology graduate David Pattinson was the first recipient of The John Ray Trust’s John Ray Science Prize, which was awarded during a ceremony at Notley High School in Braintree.

John Ray was born in November 1627 at Black Notley and became the leading British natural scientist of the 17th century.

The Trust also sponsors science prizes for students at local schools and supports links with Cambridge University, where John Ray was a tutor.
