Braintree: Pub permission granted despite fears about impact on town Braintree: Pub permission granted despite fears about impact on town

Approval has been granted for a pub to be built on a business park despite fears it could draw people away from the town centre.

Brewers Greene King have been granted permission to build a Hungry Horse pub on scrubland in Avenue East, on the Skyline 120 business park in Great Notley.

Permission had been granted to build a restaurant on the site in 2007, but last week Braintree Council’s planning committee approved an application to allow a pub to be built.

Ron Ramage, district councillor for Braintree Central, said: “There is a captive audience for this facility and it is a growth area so I feel there needs to be some facilities around the area to cater for the people actually working there.”

Councillors spoke of the potential employment benefits of having a pub on the site.

But James Abbott, the only committee member to vote against the proposals, said: “I have concerns about the impact on residents as the pub will be open every night until 12.30am and it says specifically it is likely to draw custom from a wider area.

“I thought we were supposed to be protecting our town centre.”

The Hungry Horse pub is expected to create ten full-time and 30 part-time jobs.

The site would also include a 70-space car park, a patio, a beer garden and a children’s play area.

Braintree council as dumb as ever. Suddenly now they worry about taking trade away from the town centre after allowing the building of practically a whole new town at Free Port, which completely decimated the centre of Braintree, probably forever. Now they worry about one pub? Who are these clowns..??

I totally agree with James Abbott and bluemax77.
Ron Ramage, you should be ashamed of youself saying that the area is a growth area, what about the impact of local residents and the appeal of Braintree. Growth area means concreting over green areas, soon Braintree will be known for cheap houses, East Londoners and Freeport! wow Braintree Council have done a great job. Braintree used to be a pleasant village with hardly any crime.

When growing up, Braintree was a wonderful bustling market town, which actually had a high street that mattered. During that time, most Londoners called us "country-bumbkins" - a phase I was only too happy to live with after seeing where they came from. Now over the years, they suddenly all want to live here and apparently be a bumpkin like the rest of us, bringing with them their crime, ruddiness and indifference towards anything that isn't loud, brash or obnoxious. Braintree isn't Ilford, Dagenham or Barkingside, although these days you'd be hard pushed to know the difference. Seeing how it's all turned out, I can only assume it's these same new comers that now make policy. My parents must be turning in his graves...

BlueMax. I hear you & totally agree.

But please Don’t tar us (east Londoners) all with the same brush.

I moved to B’tree 7 years ago, attracted by the cheap-ish housing & a chance to bring my Children up in what I call England, not that godforsaken place I used to call home i.e. the East End of London.

I work, I commute, I don’t cause trouble, I use the local pubs, I’ve made great friends in B’tree & feel part of the community, my kids are getting on well in school & as a family we are happy.

I also know other East London family’s in B’tree ( 4 in my small street alone) who like me just want a chance to bring their kids up in a decent place. If it is the other East Londoners who have caused the town to decline in respects of crime, drugs etc., then maybe as a town the vast majority of decent hardworking folk should do something about it

inexileinessex, I hear you loud and clear, I understand everything you say.
We just want to be left alone and still be classed as country bumkins, Braintree Council want to turn us in to Basildon, Ilford, Dagenham.....why can't they see Braintree is being destroyed, if not already. I have nothing against E Londoners, you sound great, and totally understand why u got out.

Keep Essex.

Appreciate the comments and I do think it’s a shame the way things have turned out & will continue to turn out for the town.

To be honest mate I can only see the situation getting worse what with all the housing still being built & the gov’t policy of 10% of all new builds going to housing association tenets (many of them from the East London area)

I guess you are feeling as invaded as us East Londoners were in the 1970’s….there was nothing we could do about it then & sadly there is nothing you can do about it now.

Not wishing to make your angst any worse, but there is on You tube a short 1966 tour of Braintree on a hand held cine camera (in colour too) not sure if you have seen it but 1966 Braintree did indeed look a very beautiful traditional English country market town. How things have changed & goes to show how much the politicians screwed it up for all of us.

Cheers mate god bless
