Part of a wallpaper and upholstery shop which closed suddenly in August could now be converted into housing.

Mellons, in Newland Street, Witham, closed on August 10 after several decades in the town.

A planning application has been submitted to convert the back half of the premises into a two-bedroom home.

Applicant Brian Mills said: “I am proposing to turn the back half of the shop (the upper level) into a two bed dwelling whilst still keeping the front half of the building as a shop as the owners have no need to have the shop this big anymore.

The Mellons DIY shop in Halstead closed down in April, after 50 years. Two people were made redundant at the time, while two staff were transferred to the Witham branch.

Perhaps the owners will live in the house bit and rent the shop bit to someone else. Sounds OK to me

I can assure you the owners will not be moving in, this is an investment property and the "applicant" is the husband of one of the owners. 6 staff were ditched with no notice, pay or redundancy in order to achieve this so for their sake I sincerely hope BDC refuse this application

Whilst it's not good to have empty shops in the High st, and this shop is a bit of an eyesore, it should have never been allowed to have it's extension way back, when the lovely victorian house it used to be was defaced,
I was a loyal customer for years and am so sad a lovely shop has gone from the high st.
BDC should refuse planning on principal as the owners booted the staff out with no pay.
