Witham: Boss who marched thief through streets on verge of bankruptcy Witham: Boss who marched thief through streets on verge of bankruptcy

A boss who marched a man through the streets with a sign around his neck saying “thief” is on the verge of financial ruin.

Simon Cremer, 48, led an employee through Witham town centre towards the police station in October 2008 after discovering he was writing himself cheques from a company account.

A sign around his neck said: “Thief. I stole £845. Am on my way to police station.”

The employee was cautioned for stealing, but he then sued Mr Cremer, of Hawkes Road, Witham, because of the trauma and distress he suffered as a result of the incident.

Mr Cremer was ordered to pay his former employee £5,000 following civil proceedings, but he was also landed with legal costs totalling £40,000, which he says he is unable to pay.

I agree. The outcome is very sad for Mr Cremer and not at all what he had expected - or deserved.

Poor man, why is he in the wrong? Mr Creamer had every right to protest at the THIEF! He should have the law on his side and not be out of pocket himself. It seems the more lawful you are the worse off you become.
