Braintree district: Survey reveals towns' shopping habits Braintree district: Survey reveals towns' shopping habits

Freeport helps boost Braintree trade, while Witham shoppers are often browsers with no intention of buying anything, a survey has revealed.

A phone survey of 800 people revealed both Braintree and Witham residents typically stay in their hometown to buy groceries.

While 65% of Braintree residents shopped in the town for luxury goods, only 16% of Witham residents chose to shop for luxury products in their hometown.

Braintree Council appointed planners Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners to undertake a survey into retail habits ahead of an upcoming Local Development Framework (LDF) meeting.

The purpose of the study is to define the boundaries of the district’s town centres, and to assess the retail needs of the towns from now until the year 2026.

Love it! Only 16% of Witham residents brought luxury goods in Witham . What are they calling luxury goods. If its jewellery or expensive gifts, but what else can you get in Witham beyond essential items. Witham needs a serious rethink as does this survey. How can you conduct a quality survey comparing two very different town centres and think your'll get away with it--- and how much did that pointless survey cost

It could also mean that the people of Witham have slightly higher expecations as to what "luxury goods" are. I don't think a McDonalds Drive-Thro counts. LOL
