Age 105 and still going strong
A FEISTY lady who shares her birthday with the Queen and Adolf Hitler has celebrated her 105th birthday.
Amazing Amy Greenwood is a popular, and the oldest, resident at Willowmead residential home in Hatfield Peverel, where she has lived for the past five years.
Born on April 21, 1903 in Halifax, she helped her foundryman father to look after her three brothers and two sisters after her mother died.
Mrs Greenwood married husband Arthur in 1932 and they ran a pork butchers business in Halifax, which she ran singlehandly while looking after son Richard when Mr Greenwood was called to serve in the fire service during the war.
The couple moved to Chelmsford in 1957 after Mr Greenwood became ill, following their son who had moved to the county town in 1953 to work an apprenticeship with Marconi.
They spent many years in Springfield and Mrs Greenwood continued to live at home until her 100th birthday. Sadly her husband died in 1990, aged 80.
Richard Greenwood, who is married to Pam and lives in Mulberry Way in Springfield, said his mother's long life could be down to her strong willpower.
"She's quite a strong person. She could be quite difficult at times. She's a very tough lady."
Myra Heuer, activities coordinator at Willowmead, said: "I've never known anybody before who's reached the age of 105. I think she is an amazing lady. She's still very feisty."
Mrs Greenwood has two grandchildren, Martin and Julia, and three great-grandchildren, Alice, Imogen and Alexander.
