Only one game went ahead this week in the Daniel Robinson and Son's Limited-sponsored Braintree and District Petanque League.

It was a local derby between Rayne Cock 1 and Rayne Swan 2 which saw a good away win by the Swan team.

The opening triples game was fairly even until the score reached 8-7 in Swan's favour.

After falling short with all their boule the Cock had to stand and watch the game disappear, as the Swan triple pointed in for five and the game.

Two regional junior team-mates were on opposite sides in the doubles and Cock's James Hardy partnered by Scott Wilsdon came out on top over Harry Waldie and his father Matt, winning 13-7.

Tom Smith wrapped up the deciding singles game 13-9 against Paul Linehan to claim the first win of the season for the Swan team.

Eastern Counties Region Petanque players were in good form at the English Petanque Association's first National Triples qualifier held in Hampshire.

With 33 teams from around the UK taking part, ECR's Herve Bavazzano is in pole position.

Along with his team mates Baker (London), Rousseau (West Midlands) and Claydon (Chiltern) they remained the only unbeaten team throughout the day's play.

In third place are the ECR team of Chris Allen, Vanessa Webb and Sofiane Lachani.

They, along with team-mate Nick Baxter from Kent, only lost one game all day to a team from Kent who went on to finish ahead of them in second place.

Close behind in fourth place are the all ECR team of Dean Little, Keith Flack and Dinesh Seetahul who won five of their six games, two of them 13-0 and only just losing out 13-12 to a team from London/Southern regions.

In a creditable 19th place is ECR's Adam Buxton, Dave Mark and Vince Schofield who won three out of six, including a good 13-2 win over a team from the Isle of Wight.

All players are playing to improve their EPA rankings and the top team will represent England in international matches and the forthcoming World Championships.
