The murder of a young man in Bocking has shocked the local community, but is living in the area really "hell"?

Following the stabbing of Alan Reilly of Trotters Field, Braintree, in Coldnailhurst Avenue on April 22 residents have talked of being afraid of youths in the area, but others have said it was not a bad place to live.

Natalie Carlisle, store supervisor of Co-op at Panfield Lane's junction with Coldnailhurst Avenue, said the area seemed a lot better than it used to be, but with the recent murder it made people think trouble was not far away from your doorstep.

She said up to about a year ago the store was having "a hell of a lot" of trouble, especially from youths hanging around, and in one instance while pregnant she was punched in the stomach by a guy trying to steal a bottle of wine.

But she believed Braintree police and Braintree Council had worked hard to improve the area, and it was "too strong" to say living there was "hell."

Its not just a braintree problem, its a national problem. What is left to deter anti-social behaviour? prisons are full, fines don't work - ah yes community services of which there are very few checks.

I have lived in Coldnailhurst Avenue for the past 13 years and it has been a great place to live, unfortunately due to recent events I no longer feel as safe as I used to. I am writing this as I have read all the nice messages that were left for Alan Riley and I would not like to wish anyone dead especially in those circumstances but I witnessed the event on that evening and from what I saw he was the instigator from the start and he was to say the least very nasty, the language was appalling and the attacks that led up to the stabbing were awful and very distressing and ALL coming from him, i'm not in any way saying he deserved what he got but he was also no angel on that evening and it has made me frightened to live in my own home.

The area has a massive drug problem, they are sold openly on the streets. Why the police can't see this I don't know? If they got control of this problem the young man would still be alive today.

It is not a bad place to live 1 person has been stabbed it could happen anywhere for example i live on Beckers green road bad reputation to some but its not as bad as people make out but there has been a lot of stabbings just none fatal thankfully but i stil think its ok to live in as bad as it sounds stabbings and drugs are a normal way of life in the UK now and i believe it will be until the goverment really want to stop it and i hope they do soon because it will be shootings in Braintree before we know it...
