Historic high street set for revamp
A town's historical high street is set to receive £300,000 in heritage funding to preserve its ancient features.
Newland Street in Witham is packed with historical buildings, most of which date back to the 18th century but with some that date back as far as medieval times.
The traditional buildings can all be repaired or have their original features reinstated thanks to £150,000 of English Heritage funding, £75,000 from Essex County Council, £45,000 from Braintree District Council and £30,000 from Witham Town Council.
Jeremy Lucas, Essex County Council cabinet member for heritage, culture and the arts, said: "Receiving this funding means that parts of this wonderful medieval town can be restored and repaired.
"Witham is steeped in history and I am very pleased that we will be able to restore the valuable historical features of the buildings in Newland Street."
Anyone who owns a building in Newland Street and believes it to be eligible for restoration work should contact Paul Skeet, Essex County Council's grants officer, on 01245 437673.

Perhaps its about time that the whole issue of preservation should be considered and stopping the quarry lorries from thundering down Chipping Hill all day would be a great place to start.

witham is great, if you don't like it then move, i must admit we could do with less charity shops and the concrete cancer of the shopping precinct really needs revamping, keep the town alive by using the independant retailers.

I was pleasantly surprised by Witham, and in particular the High Street, when I moved here late last year.
By comparison, the High Street in Billericay, (where I moved from), is pretty rubbish, inundated with charity shops, estate agents, endless restaurants, but nowhere to actually shop (unless you can afford to shop at Waitrose)! Give me Witham High Street any day.

I recently came to Witham to shop for a change. The shop assistants are rude and ignorant in most of the shops, especially Monday's and the town has nothing to offer, Preserving the High Street should perhaps have been done before allowing Elements to look like a poor class knocking shop! The Newlands shopping area is tacky and with the exception a couple of shops looks like the ghetto it really is. Braintree is not much better but I do like Billericay.[bold]bold[/bold]

300K to preserve the ancient features of Newland St eh? We had an ancient feature called The Spread Eagle pub,it's only been there about 600 years how much more ancient do you want to get! The council didn't give a stuff about preserving ancient features then.I hope by ancient features they are not talking about post modernist concrete eye sore shopping precincts!
