A FORMER pub landlord and Navy man has been granted his last wish in having his ashes laid to rest near the wreck of his old battleship.
Arthur 'Ginger' Quantrill Bryant - who ran The Willows in Cressing for 15 years - had served on HMS Barham for two years when it was torpedoed by a German submarine in November 1941.
He was one of the lucky 450 crew who survived, with 861 men losing their life as the ship exploded and sank within four minutes.
All Mr Bryant had to wear when the ship went down were his blue pyjamas.
As requested in his will, his ashes were recently scattered above the shipwreck off Alexandria in Egypt by Royal Navy divers.
