LICENSEES hope a new radio link will help them crackdown on late night town centre disorder and save lives.
Braintree Pubwatch has been awarded £6,500 to buy 30 portable radios and a base station so that pub landlords and shops can alert police and Braintree Council's mobile CCTV operators to any trouble.
The cash was given by the district council's Braintree local committee, after councillor Trevor McArdle put forward a bid on behalf of Pubwatch.
Brendan Flynn, who runs Brendan's Pub and Club Eden in the town, believes the radios will save lives because licensees can report violent incidents immediately to police, instead of only having to dial 999, and door staff can get on the scene quickly.
He said: "The police and CCTV will react instantly so what it will do is crack down on crime and disorder in the town and that is only the start of what we want to do."
