Teen troubled by crime
A teenager no longer feels safe even a few miles from home because she fears crime is "spiralling out of control".
Hayley Baldwin, of Aire Walk in Witham, feels the town's picturesque River Walk and Maldon Road park are particularly unsafe and is concerned about crime generally.
The 17-year-old said: "Crimes nowadays are spiralling out of control and the victims and attackers are getting younger and younger.
"I don't like walking down the River Walk on my own because there's hardly any street lamps."
The A-level student also knows a fellow student at Chelmsford College who was raped in Chelmsford last year.
"A young girl was raped and brutally attacked by Riverside, Chelmsford, just metres from the public eye, the attack took place in the early evening; it could have been any of us," said Miss Baldwin, a former John Bramston School pupil.
Sgt Kerry Hackett, of Witham Police, said attacks are uncommon in Witham, with most victims of violent crime knowing who their attackers are.
She added: "Maldon Road park is being regenerated and there is talk about having lighting there.
"The River Walk is dark, but I would urge people to take the normal common sense precautions - if it takes an extra five minutes to get home using a lit route, then do it for peace of mind."

I feel Silver End is the same. There's no way I would consider going out after dark. If you go to the Co-Op you get shouted at and have footballs kicked at you and I reguarly get shouted at while waiting for the bus. Silver End desperately needs it's police station back... not just some mobile one that turns up during the day when nothing is happening.
