Southend Airshow this weekend

Southend Airshow this weekend Southend Airshow this weekend

UP, up and away - the Southend Airshow takes to the skies once again this weekend.

The annual show takes place this year on Saturday and Sunday (May 28 and 29) on the seafront.

Now in its 26th year, the Southend Airshow is Europe’s largest free air display.

With flying displays from more than 40 aircraft, both historic and modern, the skies over Southend will be full of thrills and spills.

There will be a full afternoon's flying programme on both days from 2pm, so expect to see firm favourites again this year such as the RAF’s premier display team, the Red Arrows, the daredevil Breitling wingwalkers and the RAF Falcons parachute team, who will make a spectacular entrance on Westcliff beach.

There will also be the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight team including a Lancaster bomber, Hurricane and Spitfire.

Good fun is also to be had on the ground where the Red Arrows Village offers the chance to meet the pilots, try flight simulators and see one of the Red Arrow planes at close range.

There will also be RAF, Royal Navy and Army displays alongside bungee trampolines, inflatable water walkers and displays from the band of the Royal Marines and the RAF Marham ceremonial dog display team.

if i'm right in thinking they'll probably put the tornado role demo in that slot although thats yet to appear on the official airshow website.
well with cameron and co cutting most of the airforce and libya there isn't much available RAF wise, also like someone said a few weeks ago privately owned classic jets cost a lot so the cheapest thing to do is book civillian stunt plane display teams such as the blades.
at least we're getting the vulcan this year also knowing southends luck that stupid volcano will put a dampner on precidings, hope not becuase i really wanna see the vulcan!
does anyone know if the ash cloud poses a risk to the airshow?

Met office say it will be back Friday and cover the UK all weekend but will be at "airways altitude"

Which will still hit the airshow as some of the acts such as Vulcan fly high to get to the venue.

It will only come here if the weather is good. I should imagine it is only cleared to fly in VFR conditions.
Rather like the BBMF, it won't fly if the weather is marginal.

Apparently the volcano has stopped spewing out ash and is now just puffing steam however the Transport Secretary Philip Hammond says the ash cloud is expected to come back to the UK on Friday.

But it may return at such high altitude that aircraft may be able to fly beneath it.

The like of 558 are not airways traffic so they will be able to fly below it, as for the weather the MET Office are currently show Saturday as: medium level cloud, dry with good vis however there will be a 20mph wind gusting to 32mph. Sunday Sunny spells with the gusting hitting 39mph.

I'm sure with aircraft as rare as the Vulcan or the Spitfire, Lancaster and Hurricane; they are likely to be over cautious when it comes to ash. However, those strong winds forecasted could be equally detrimental to the flying displays, so if the forecast prevails, very little may be flying at the weekend. I sincerely hope that doesn't turn out to be the case.

The wind on Saturday is not too bad, beleve its within limits of most of the acts. As long as the ash remains at airways levels (over 20,000ft) then most should still take part.

It's not just the power of your own computer, its the power needed to run the hundreds of servers used for Google or other networks you may use and the heavy metals used in its manufacture, demolition and shipping.
Its funny how the local Green campaigners (one who's business is IT) never mentions IT, but is always willing to have a pop at aviation despite IT's 'so called carbon footprint' being so high.
...
As for the serial whingers (Alice in Wonderland). Of course it is not everyones cup of tea, but it brings alot to the area and it is only for a few days.
Considering the short time to put this together, and the lack of an RAF, the programme is very good.
Fingers crossed for the weather.

Just changing the subject, has anyone seen the latest joke SAEN have put on their website about Southend Airport. They have conducted their own LITTLE survey in Southend West (Under the flight path, where i suppose they know they have more chance of support) they visited only 92 homes, yes you heard my right only 92, and they say this proves an overwhelming opposition for the airport lol. A mere 101 adults polled out of 180,000 people. Just goes to show that SAEN are obviously desperate and running out of idea's fast lol.

I choose not to go the air show, for the fact it, mainly, glorifies war planes that killed so many people in the war. I accept that it is a good crowd puller for Southend, but do you not think that rejuvination of the pier, back to it's old Victorian days, would be a well spent council project and would bring a CONSTANT touristic revenue to Southend. Just for the record, there was a tornado in Aveley, on Thursday. A real one!

It doesn't glorify warplanes at all. It helps us to remember those who lost their lives to give us our freedom.
.
As well as seeing how some of our taxes are spent.

It's also a great entertainment, and a very good Recruitment tool for 'our' Armed forces (what's left of them). I don't see it a glorifying war in anyway at all.
I believe the Hawk display pilot began her flying career at our local Airport too. ;)

Ok. I dont see it as glorifying how it was achieved either. It does demonstrate their capabilities, and gives the pilots a chance to give something back to the public for their support in the form of entertainment. Hopefully it will inspire people to consider a career later also.
I hope HforH have a stand on the front within the static displays, or the RAF Benevolent fund.

How dare you use the oldest trick as a form of defence, for your inept comments, regarding lost friends and servicemans charities, just because you drop coins into a collection tin, does not distance you from being the hypocrite we have all to often seen, from people who all too often enjoy their freedom, at the expense of others.
Pangs of guilt? oh well, drop another tenner in the tin.............

SOUTHEND AIR SHOW-sat 28th 2011
Plenty of attractions on the ground from flight simulators to the top gears stig - simulator. The air display programme looked a little thin on fast jets with the hawk and vampire trying desperately to bring some noise to the event - but that all changed when two tornado gr4,s turned up totally unannounced and did a stunningly noisy display with wings folded back the entire time. And then along came the avro vulcan - there is something about the vulcan that makes the jaw drop - its futuristic shape, noisy and graceful..if you looked at the flying programme and decided not to go - you missed a great show.
