We asked Braintree's Labour hopeful Malcolm Fincken six questions, but only gave him 50 words to answer. These are the results:

1. What do you think about the current government-set house building targets in Braintree?

A substantial house building programme is essential to provide enough homes for our children and grandchildren. We should build first on brownfield sites, local people should have a major say in where new settlements are built and most of the new homes should be affordable and social housing.

2. Apart from the NHS, what should be the government’s number one spending priority?

Social services, including care services for children, the disabled, vulnerable adults and the elderly, have been severely damaged by the Coalition government. The next Labour Government will need to invest to enable them to provide the quality of service that we expect and to reduce pressures on the NHS.

3. What personally sets you apart from the other candidates?

I am the only local candidate for one of the major parties, having lived in this constituency for nearly 40 years. I’ve taught in two local secondary schools, I’m Chair of the local Children’s Centres and I’ve been a Braintree District Councillor for 16 years. I know the constituency well.

4. Name a pledge you will fulfil, if elected, within 100 days.

I will make sure that the next Labour Government gets rid of the cruel, inhumane bedroom tax.

5. What do you think is the biggest challenge Braintree will face over the next five years (house building aside)?

The biggest challenge will be to ensure that high quality services and infrastructure are provided to support our growing population. We will need increased health services and schools - recruiting enough doctors and teachers to Braintree will be a challenge. We must also invest in improved road and rail links.

6. Is there a policy or piece of legislation YOU would personally propose if elected which is not in your party’s manifesto?

I would like to see much more support for grass roots sports, walking and cycling - both to create a healthier nation and to reduce carbon emissions.
