Lead flashing worth about £2,500 has been stolen from a museum roof.

Thieves targeted Braintree District Museum, Manor Street, Braintree, at 9:30 pm on May 8.

Thieves climbed on to the roof to remove the metal.

Robert Rose, museum services manager, said: "We're obviously very upset that the historic fabric of the building has been damaged in this way."

Museum staff discovered the theft within 12 hours of it happening.

No internal damage was caused.

The museum captured images of the incident on their CCTV.

It is the third time thieves have stolen lead from the museum roof.

It was targeted on December 6 and October 29 last year.

Police are appealing for information.
