Narrow defeat for Dane
Halstead Boxing Club's Dane Avery produced a fine performance in the National Golden Gloves Eastern Counties Final.
The 13-year-old Essex Schools Champion, who has had six previous ABA bouts, took on experienced Norfolk champion Steve Middleton, who has had 12 bouts.
It was an excellent performance from Avery, who had been training for many weeks for the bout.
However, Middleton's experience told on the day and the Halstead boxer lost the bout by a single point.
Head Coach Dean Svensson said: "All of us at Halstead Boxing Club are very proud of Dane.
"He has worked really hard and walks away with his head held high - he will be back."
Over a three-round bout Avery started the brighter of the two fighters, moving forward and pushing the fight by throwing good combinations to the body and head.
Moving well, Avery took the first round on points.
Middleton began to use his experience in the second round and started edging back into the fight, throwing good solid shots and making Avery work hard for his share of the points.
In the final round Middleton really pushed Dane back.
It was a hard round with both fighters giving their all, prompting a standing ovation from the crowd at the end.
