Cash-strapped commuters face more pressure after the Government confirmed it will reinstate a planned fare rise from January.

Season ticket fares will revert to three per cent above inflation after they were limited this year to one per cent to ease the financial strain.

Inflation is currently at three per cent, meaning rail fares will increase by six per cent on average and up to 11 per cent in the most extreme cases.

David Bigg, chairman of Witham and Braintree Rail Users Association, said: “If you are getting a salary increase of one per cent average, with many having their salaries frozen, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work out that along with your fuel and energy bills, it’s going to hit your pocket.”
